From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Just back from a trade mission to Viet Nam, Washington State Director of Agriculture, Derek Sandison is feeling good about the potential in that market for producer in our state.

Sandison says it was a promotional event attended by many from our state and across the country …

SANDISON … “I was part of two trade missions at the same time. So, Washington state originally was the Governor’s trade mission. There’s that group, but I was also spending some time with the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture and their emerging markets program again promoting our products in Viet Nam.”

And no surprise, Sandison says Washington apples were part of the discussions …

SANDISON … “Viet Nam is a very attractive market for us, particularly Washington state, and last year exported about $157 million worth of ag products to Viet Nam, including $57 million worth of apples. So, they are our number 10 export market for Washington state so, again, we value them quite highly and it’s a market with a lot of potential for growth.”

Sandison says many Washington products were represented …

SANDISON … “Yeah, there’s a number of segments or sectors of our ag industry that benefit from trade with Viet Nam.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on Sandison’s trade mission to Viet Nam.
