Fishing Oregon’s Rogue River.
Each week, I talk with one of the sales associates at one of the Sportsman’s Warehouse stores and I never miss. They are totally knowledgeable as we will find out from Mike St. John from me Medford store. I asked what is going on. “Right now in southern Oregon and actually up the coast, we are on the Rogue River, which is world-famous by the way, in the middle of the spring salmon run, where fishing Springer’s which are the best table fare for any salmon in the lower 48. Right now for the Springers as they are fishing the river. The bank fishermen will use anywhere from and eight and a half foot medium- heavy action rod to a 9 foot heavy action rod with a level wind reel, generally the Shimanos, Abu Garcias and as far as gear, you can go anywhere from using an ounce and a half of lead to 3 ounces depending on the speed of the current. You are basically bouncing that along the bottom, they will use different colored beads as an attractor type thing. if you’re fishing from a river boat or a drift boat, the guides will do what they call pulling plugs, they do that for steelhead too. Generally the bait of choice is a size K-14 or K-15 quick fish which is a huge flat fish. It is a huge wobbling plug and it will usually will have a sardine wrapped on it for smell.
