I got talking the other day with Craig Hettinger from Red’s Flyshop up in Wasington State about all kinds of flyfishing issues.  Are bamboo rods good, what reels does he recommend, how about line and so on. His response: “Bamboo rods are generations ahead of the original bamboo rods. They are unique fishing tools for single-handed and double handed casting. They are quite a bit slower than the graphite I use and they are a little bit heavier but it is a gorgeous rod. The fly shop owners to not like me to talk about reels. Reels are a storage unit for fly line. There are pretty reveals, there’s Hatch and there’s Able, but it’s just a storage unit for fly line because you always have the line in your hand, not on the reel. You are not reeling in all the time. What you are saying is if you put your money into something put it into the rod not the reel is that what you are saying? Exactly, puts her money into the rod and then put it into the line because there are no bad rods and there are no bad lines but there are horrible rod/line combinations. Sometimes it takes a little bit of time to find the combination that matches your casting stroke. You cannot do it the first time that’s why most people need to go have lessons, learn what they’re doing, so that people with experience can see them cast and help them line their rod and line to their casting stroke.
