After a brief respite, parts of the Columbia Basin are set to get more snow later this afternoon into Wednesday. Most of the snow will fall east of a line from Dayton and Walla Walla down to Pendleton. In these area 4 to 6 inches may accumulate and the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning. Also, you can expect farm to market transport and farm deliveries to be hampered in these areas until Thursday or Friday. Travel in the Cascades and Blue mountains will also be difficult at times. Although the precipitation will be significant, the winds for the most part should not exceed 10 mph, so livestock cold stress will increase to only the moderate category. The snow will decrease to the west and farms in the Moses Lake, Ellensburg, Yakima, and Hermiston areas may get only an inch or so. Another weather system is possible this weekend with the chance for more snow. Last week we talked about the record snow for February already in some areas of the Columbia Basin. f you think this has also been a rather cold February, you're right on track as most farms are averaging 8 to 12 degrees below normal so far this month. This could end up being a top five coldest February on record. That might be a bold statement, but the outlook for the rest of the month shows no let up in the below normal temperatures. Next week also looks unsettled with precipitation at times.
