Examining Beef Production and Marketing Options

Alltech Beef Nutrition Research Project Manager Dr. Vaughn Holder tells beef producers to consider different production and marketing opportunities for their cattle.

Holder: "I just want producers to realize what types of programs and opportunities are there for them and the fact that they may have the opportunity to make more than they are currently making now and probably not have to change too much in what they are doing. I honestly believe that most producers are doing the right thing and I think if you the opportunity to be paid more for doing what you are doing than I think you should take that opportunity."

He suggests working with companies to help you identify potential opportunities that would fit with your operation's production.

Holder: "Talk a lot about independent verification companies who actually come in and help you to go through your processes to determine what you need to do in order to meet those program. A couple of those type of programs in the U.S. would be non-hormone treated cattle or verified natural cattle, or organic cattle and the various premiums that those opportunities offer. There is also the opportunity to open up beef export to open up to other countries which is becoming a huge deal. These may be things that farmers might already be doing and may have an opportunity to be paid more just by getting a certificate."

He encourages beef producers to explore these opportunities with an open mind.
