National Western Stock Show Changes. Welcome to Colorado Ag Today. I’m Greg Martin.

For the last 109 years, the National Western Stock Show has been drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The event gets underway next week, Jan, 10 - 25 but under the hood of this long running show, some changes are being planned according to the President and CEO, Paul Andrews.

ANDREWS: We really need to change the business model that we’re in in addition to the facility that we hold our show and so we’ve obviously partnered with the city and county of Denver and Colorado State University and Museum of Nature and Science as well as History Colorado to look at a concept where we can develop a complex that operates 365 days a year that’s focused on agriculture.

Andrews talk about what this new center would provide.

ANDREWS: Programs for students and business people. community members, tourists. Theres will be able to enjoy what Colorado and the world of agriculture and the history that we represent across the complex year-round and that will be known as the National Western Center. So the Stock Show would be held at the National Western Center but the remainder of the year would have other agricultural elements as well as some entertainment elements.

A new addition to this year’s show will be the National Western BBQ Throwdown.

ANDREWS: There’s about 50 events a day that anyone can attend with your grounds admission ticket and this year we’ve launched a couple of new ones. One of them is the National Western BBQ Throwdown. We’ll have 42 teams competing for the BBQ championship.

And that’s today’s report. I’m Greg Martin, thanks for listening to Colorado Ag Today on the Ag Information Network of the West.
