FDA Dairy Risk Assessment

FDA Dairy Risk Assessment

FDA Dairy Risk Assessment. I'm Greg Martin with Colorado Ag Today.

The Food & Drug Administration is seeking public comment on the risk assessment of drug residues in milk and milk products. Cindy Haren, President and CEO for Western Dairy Association says studies have proven there is no risk.

HAREN: The hypothesis was not supported by the results of the tests that they had over the last couple of years and the reason is that it is clearly shown that there was no antibiotic found in milk that was headed to market.

We caught up with Haren sitting in Chicago's O'Hare airport. She says the dairy industry has taken all this very seriously.

HAREN: The dairy farmers took the lead about the year 2010 and said we need to gather up the dairy industry and keep looking at our best management practice. So that was when they publicly announced that they were bringing the whole industry together, the whole value chain and they were going to be really looking seriously at all the best management practices.

Haren says the public needs to do their research about the dairy industry.

HAREN: If you look at where consumers are today there's still a very high percentage of consumer confidence in our food, especially when it comes to our milk. The information is on the website and anybody can access that.
