During the first two weeks of September, growers of small grains will receive USDA National Ag Statistics Service survey forms. NASS Mountain Regional Director Bill Meyer encourages grain growers to take the time to fill out the surveys

Meyer: “This survey will be starting at the end of August and go through the first two weeks of September. We’ll be collecting information on their wheat, barely, oats and also what grains they have stored on hand. It is definitely worth their time. The information recorded is used for extensively — not only for marketing decisions or how much small grains were produced. But also the stocks of information — that is so important in the marketing decisions; for the Federal Crop Insurance program also. It doesn’t take long — this one is relatively short. We’re asking about acreage planted, harvested, and average yield for your different small grains and how much grains you have stored on hand, as of September 1. All the producers will receive it by mail. You can stick it back in the mail or we also have a very secure online reporting system — you will get a code in the mail to report that way. If you prefer towards the end of the survey period — they will get a call.”

The survey results will be published in several reports, including the annual Small Grains Summary and the quarterly Grain Stocks report, both to be released September 30.
