Vesicular Stomatitis Update

Colorado currently has 70 quarantined cases of Vesicular Stomatitis. Colorado State Veterinarian Dr. Keith Roehr gives an update.
Roehr: “This year we have three counties that have the majority of our cases. Two of them are in the Western Slope and those are in Montrose and Delta County. Then we have Larimer County which is in the Front Range. Fort Collins is the largest city in Larimer County. Then the rest of the cases are sprinkled around the state — which is a little bit unusual but the rest of the counties have no more than five or six cases in those counties.
Livestock owners who suspect an animal may have VS or any other vesicular disease should immediately contact their veterinarian. Livestock with Clinical signs of VS are isolated until there is no further threat of disease spread. Dr. Roehr continues
Roehr: “I guess the other good news is that we are seeing about a equal number of new cases and then quarantine cases. So, we’re releasing quite a few quarantine but I think for the next several weeks we will be hovering around 50 to 70 active cases.”
A reminder that flies play a critical role in spreading of this disease, so it is very important to take steps to reduce the fly populations near livestock.
