Colorado's Sorghum Crop and Nationwide

According to the Colorado NASS Crop Progress Report ending on Sunday —- the state’s sorghum crop shows about 90 percent as mature compared to the previous week’s 68 percent and 35 percent was harvested last week compared to the previous week’s 16 percent. Crop condition of sorghum shows 69 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and only 3 percent poor — which is much better than the five year average. Sorghum Checkoff’s High-Value Market Director Doug Bice says with sorghum acres up this year and the USDA predicting a national yield increase, farmers are playing their part by producing a good quality crop.
Bice: “Roughly two-thirds of the crop is basically in a good to excellent condition and we are about half way at the half-way point of all the sorghum in the U.S. being harvested. A very promising year — I’m going to go out on a limb and say that those are somewhat conservative numbers. At the end of it all, we hope to see somewhere between 550 million bushels to 600 million bushels would be the projection of where we sit right now, looking at those acres and the yield rates where we are out. So a tremendous year for us.”
He says sorghum quality starts with treating sorghum as a true primary crop.
At harvest, producers should make sure that their equipment is working correctly and is well-maintained. Raising headers such that we reduce the amount of green materials going through the combine and optimizing speed conditions. That green material could impact the grade of the sorghum — so we want to keep as much out of that as we can.”
