CCA's Outstanding Commercial Producer of the Year

At the January’s Colorado Cattlemen’s Association’s Mid-Winter Conference, the CCA presented awards to highlight industry members who have made a difference in the state’s beef industry. This year’s CCA Commercial Producer of the year was Karney Land & Cattle which is owned and operated by Pat and Robin Karney near Las Animas in Southeast Colorado. Pat Karney shares more details about their operation.

Karney: “We run about 500 mother cows and then we have a heifer development program. We keep our very best heifers out of our own herd and then buy some outstanding heifers from a couple ranches in Southeast Colorado plus some in Nebraska. We probably develop between 400 and 500 heifers and breed them. We use some in our herd, but sell some bred.”

They implement a 100% AI breeding program for heifers, with strict criteria for staying in the herd. He shares what winning this award meant to the Karney family

Karney: “We were very humbled by it. It is a great award and a lot of great ranches in colorado have won this award in the past and we are just honored to be associated with those ranchers.”

He adds that three generations of his family are actively involved with the operation of the ranch.

Karney: “It’s a family operation. All of our kids — they are from 34 years old to 23 years old. We have four kids and they are heavily involved in it. We have seven grandkids and they help us out on the ranch — that is what it is all about.”
