Dr. Temple Grandin Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Science

Temple Grandin’s worldwide reputation as a leader in the field of humane animal handing and autism advocacy has propelled her into one of the nation’s most distinguished groups – the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Last week the Colorado State University Animal Scientist was elected with 212 other new members to the American Academy. Today am sharing some audio from a past press conference with Dr. Grandin

Grandin: “The thing that really bothers me today is that we have a whole generation that is totally separated from the world of practical things — they don’t cook, sew, build things or take phones apart and try to find out how they work. What worries me today on policy things is you are getting more and more people who are making policy about stuff and they have never held a real job. They get a degree in political science or something else and then they get a job in the beltway and they have never been outside of the beltway so they don’t know what is going on in doing practical things. Another thing about practical things is that they don’t always work perfectly. I can remember wrecking one of my sewing projects, I cut it wrong and i did wrecked it. Then there are other things where you can fix a project that you messed up.”

She says that people who aren’t familiar with how things work often have unrealistic expectations of results.

Grandin is an internationally recognized leader in animal handling innovations, and her expertise has been utilized by major corporations as well as the USDA.
