Fall Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maize Help Farm Family Tell Ag Story

Opening their farm up to students and families during the month of October is one way that Weathers Family Farm of Yuma shares their ag story with the public. Nikki Weathers shares the theme of their maize this year.

Weathers: "So our corn maize this year is a bee hive with honeycomb around the outside. Then our farm name — Weathers Family Farms — drilled into it. This year we've done a pollinator theme. So in the education portion we teach about honey bees and the importance of pollinators and how we use them on our farm — such as growing the pumpkin patch. Then they get to go through the maize shaped like a bee hive this year."

More than 500 students will participate in the school class program throughout the month. Weathers shares more details about the school activities for the participants.

Weathers: "With our school groups, we have a education portion that we teach them core curriculum and have some time in the shop and they get to eat lunch and a day to act like a farmer. Then we take them out and they get to pick their own pumpkin and they go through the corn maize. We have a sand box filled with corn -- so we have a sand box that they love to play in and a hay stack to climb on."

On the weekends, the farm is open to the public so families can come and enjoy the fun fall festivities. If you want to learn more about their operation go to weathersfamilyfarms.net.
