Each month, the Colorado Department of Agriculture features a different commodity to highlight the variety and quality of products grown, raised or processed in the state. Colorado Department of Agriculture Marketing Specialist Wendy White shares more about this month’s featured commodity

White: “Well the Colorado Proud recipe for May features greens. So it is early in the growing season but we are starting to see different greens — lettuce and kale. We also grow a variety of other greens - -collards, mustard tops, turnips those kind of things. So it is really exciting to start to see some of those green items show up at the farmer markets. So we are really excited to feature that in our recipe which is available at coloradoproud.org.”

Enjoy a lovely glass of Colorado wine such as a Dry Riesling from Plum Creek Winery of Palisades.

White continues with a reminder for farmers and ranchers that the deadline for registering Centennial Farms has been extended until May 15th.

White: “Centennial Farms is a joint program between the Colorado Department of Agriculture and the History Colorado and it honors and recognizes farms and ranches that have been in the sane family continuous for 100 years or more. The History Colorado program has extended the deadline for applications this year until May 15th. So I really encourage farms that meet the criteria for the program, apply so they can be honored at the Colorado State Fair in August.”

You can find those applications at historycolorado.org.
