Focusing on Feed Efficiency During Tough Dairy Market

With tough market conditions U.S. dairy producers are seeking ways to stay competitive. Dan Weiland of the Alltech dairy sector in North America says dairy farmers should consider ways to maximize efficiency, given the current market landscape. He says one area to examine is feed.

Weiland: “We always look at three areas when it comes to developing products or even programs at Alltech — it has to be good for the animal, it has to be good for the consumer and it has to be good for the environment. So when we put programs and products together, they have to fit those facets and really try to achieve that in all areas. One of the areas we really look at is how to trying get the most of a dairy cow. As we continue to push cows harder and harder, from a performance standpoint and we continue to want to have longevity in those cows we have look at ways of feeding those cows more efficiently and get more out of their feed.”

He says Alltech has some natural products

Weiland: “The consumer is continuing to push us getting away from antibiotics — which antibiotics are not a bad thing — but they are pushing us that way. What can we do from a natural perspective, from a feed additive perception of that we can help improve those animals performance without having treating them. We have products — I’ll just name one — Bio-Mos we’ve had this for many years and it is one approach to better immunity and help those cows perform better.
