Catch-A-Calf Program Provides 4-Hers With an Exciting Opportunity

Since 1935, the National Western Stock Show has had Catch-A-Calf Program which provides 4-Hers an exciting opportunity to compete at the National Western as well as learning practical beef management. National Western Stock Show's Livestock Coordinator Clancy Anderson explains more about this exciting program.

Anderson: "The Catch-A-Calf Program is one of National Westerns most beloved traditions. It began in 1935 with 10 boys and 10 sponsored calves. Then it grew quickly into the mid-40s to up to over 50 participants and have now settled in 40 participants in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming. We offer it to 4-H members that are 12 from 18 in that four state region."

Anderson says much of the success of the program comes from their very dedicated sponsors of the program.

Anderson: "We've given away over 3,000 calves in over 80 years. So there is a lot of history in the program, there is a lot of support, there is a lot of long-term involvement in this program. It is extremely supported. We have over 55 sponsors. Just the connections that you get to make. The unique experience of showing a calf at the Super Bowl of livestock shows in January is just incredible."
