Time to Renew Livestock Brands

Time to Renew Livestock Brands

A reminder from the Colorado Department of Ag's Brand Division, brand assessment payments must be received in the office by 5 p.m. on June 30th to avoid a $25 late fee.

CDA's Brand Commissioner Chris Whitney reminds current Colorado livestock brand owners

Whitney: "Every five years we have the assessment period and that is when owners of registered Colorado livestock brands are asked if they want to renew them for another five years. We have about 32,750-some-odd registered livestock brands, so it is a big undertaking once every five years. The vast majority of brand owners do want to renew them. It is $300 charge for the five years — so it amounts to $60 a year to retain your brand for use on livestock — or not. There are a lot of Coloradans who love the idea of having a livestock brand. They love the history and culture of it because of that they registerer brands and they don't necessarily use put them on livestock but they love to pass them down to their family."

Whitney continues with an additional reason why brand holders should turn in their payment on time.

Whitney: "The other reason it is important to make the timely payment is that people who have paid by the end of June will appear in the brand book which will be published in December or January. I'm afraid that people who are late won't make it into that book. So it will be another five years before they have a chance to appear in the book — they will still have a brand but they won't appear in the brand book."
