Colorado State Fair Brew Contest

The oldest known beer recipe dates to around 1800 BC and according to historians was found in a poem to an ancient Sumerian goddess.

Modern brewers have recreated that recipe with limited success.

Now Colorado State Fair organizers are inviting homebrewers as well as craft beer brewers to compete in a modern day brew off. Sarah Cummings is the State Fair’s General Manager.

“Craft brewers and homebrewers can enter their beers for judging and display. We typically have about 40 judges who participate in the judging the craft beer. And then there are additional entries in the homebrew. But we are sanctioned as a BJCP Contest which stands for Beer Judge Certification Program. We use those style guidelines so it makes it very popular for the craft brewers to want to participate knowing that we’ve got some sanctioning behind us. It’s a great way to showcase those beers on a statewide level.”

Graphic designers and artists are also invited to enter the beer label contest.

The homebrew competition is open to anyone 21 years old and older. The craft beer competition is open to licensed breweries.

The Colorado State Fair runs August 25-September 4, 2017
