The decision by US Senate leadership to pull the plug on the latest effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act is being applauded by the National Farmers Union.

Union president Roger Johnson says the Graham Cassidy Health Care Bill would have lessened access to affordable and quality health care for American family farmers and ranchers.

"The proposal would have destabilized individual marketplaces, caused millions to lose coverage, and weakened protections for individuals with preexisting conditions. At the same time, dramatic cuts to health care funding would have made it all but impossible for states to prevent rising premiums and rural hospital closures.

"Despite the pressing need for fixes to our health care system, congressional leadership has continuously proposed partisan plans that seek to further a political agenda rather than one that improves the lives of all Americans.

Johnson said he now hope Congress will begin writing bipartisan legislations that improves access to affordable care for family farmers and ranchers.
