Today's farmers and ranchers are already technicians, biologists, economists and marketing professionals. Experts says the nature of farming will be dramatically different in the future, relying even more on nutrigenomics and big data.

You have a tool to look at millions and billions of observations whether it's productivity, food intake, the way we grow our crops...that's going to be the big change in agriculture"

Dr. Karl Dawson, chief scientific officer at Alltech was one of experts discussing the future of farming in a recent online panel Alltech sponsored.

Dawson says we'll be moving toward armchair farming, making decisions behind a computer. The panel also talked about meeting the needs of the new consumer.
