Colorado's millet producers are being reminded that today is the last day to vote on the proposed millet check-off.

Producers should also check with their crop-share landlords, partners or LLC members to see if they have received and sent in a ballot.

A market order would allows producers of millet in Colorado to work together to solve marketing problems and conduct research. The State Agriculture Department says market orders provide the structure and resources for programs that farmers could not do alone.

Glenda Mostek explains what happens next should the producers vote to create such an order.

The market order as proposed would establish a board comprised of six producer members and one handler member. The proposed assessment (check-off) is five cents per hundredweight, which will be collected by first-handlers.

The assessment would be refundable to producers who submit an application to the board of control within 30 days of sale to a handler.

If you are a millet producer, and have not received a ballot, please contact Glenda Mostek with the Colorado Department of Agriculture at glenda.mostek@state.co.us

The Colorado Department of Agriculture provides budgetary and operations oversight to all of Colorado's eight marketing orders. These orders include milk, wheat, corn, potatoes (2), sweet corn, dry beans and sunflowers.
