The USDA is announcing its latest efforts to improve animal disease traceability to protect our nation's livestock industry.

Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Greg Ibach told USDA reporters they plan to work with the livestock industry by giving producers free reign on what technology they want to use but helping share that information from state to state.

"We've noticed that the technology keeps evolving and different sectors of the beef industry are used to using or are looking at using different technologies. So the USDA has decided it's really information that we're interested in to be able to provide that traceability ."

Ibach says USDA will share in the cost of electronic tagging should producers choose to use that technology.
