02/04/05 Potato Foundation honors Pelter

Farm and Ranch February 4, 2005 Grant/Adams Area Extension Agent Gary Pelter received the 2005 Industry Leadership Award at this week's's second annual Washington State Potato Foundation Leadership Banquet. Pelter says he was shocked to learn he would be receiving the award. Pelter: "It wasn't something I expected. It is a tremendous honor. The award has only been in existence a couple of years now. There are a lot people who have done a lot in the industry, so I was quite frankly taken aback that I was chosen." Pelter, who will be retiring soon, was selected from a group of agricultural industry nominations based on demonstrated leadership capabilities and contributions to the potato industry. As a Grant/Adams Area Extension Agent since 1980, Pelter has been training crop consultants, conducting numerous workshops, and taking an active role in the Washington State Potato Conference and Seed Lot Field Day. Pelter has acted as a liaison between growers and scientists With the honor a scholarship will also be dedicated in his name. The Gary Q. Pelter Leadership Award will be given to a college bound youth during the 2005-2006 school year. Dale Lathim, Washington State Potato Foundation Board Chairman, says Mr. Pelter is an exemplary leader who can serve as a great role model for college students who aspire to a career in the agriculture industry.
