Here with the weekly hay update is USDA Grain and Livestock Reporter Greg Sanders who shares last week’s hay report.
Sanders: “Columbia Basin Hay Report this week, we had a little over 8200 tons trade this week. Alfalfa for domestic and export trade was weak in a light test. Lower grain prices continue to drive the market. Alfalfa for good and premium for export brought $205. Fair quality alfalfa for export brought $190. Small square alfalfa for stable and retail accounts brought $250 to $260. Orchard grass for retail and stable accounts brought $260 to $275. Timothy large square premium export-quality at $220.”
In Idaho compared to previous week trade was very slow this week as both buyers and sellers tried to decide on what to do with heavy rain damaged supplies. Alfalfa large square premium sold for $220 a ton. Large square fair and good alfalfa brought $175 a ton.
In Oregon, hay prices were generally steady compared to the previous week. There was buyer interest however the volume of trading was lighter than last week due to farmers cutting and baling third and, in some areas, fourth cutting. Central Oregon small square premium alfalfa brought $250 per ton. While small square orchard grass premium brought $250 to $265 per ton. In Eastern Oregon large square supreme alfalfa brought $245 per ton and Timothy large squares rated good brought $235. Klamath Basin small square supreme alfalfa brought $270 per ton.
