Precision Ag and Ag Big Data

Precision Ag continues to become more and more precise and with the billion of data points being collected through Ag Big Data — farming by the plant rather than just by the field is closer than you think. Enterprise Group Limited President Doug Hackney shares
Hackney: “If you put decades or time epochs on it — my grandfather farmed by the field. In my lifetime, we’ve come to management zones and smaller units of measure. We have prescriptions where we can do precise applications of inputs, where we land the seed. We know a lot about the soil type fertility and so on. Now the current state of the art is our system that we’ve built does it by the square meter. So we track everything that happens on every square meter: what was planted there, when the sun was shining, how much soil moisture is there, what was sprayed and when it was sprayed — everything that happens for that entire growing season. Our goal is to track every plant. So right now we are at the one square meter level and our goal and the academics goal — everyone’s goal is to come down to the point where the plant has a voice. We feel like the plants are trying to tell us things and we are trying to figure out ways to listen to them. Our goal is to have smart dust that we spread out by air and then by mesh network via that smart dust have every plant have a voice.”
