USPB New Chairman of the Board Shares Vision

Earlier this month at the United States Potato Board’s Annual Meeting, a new Chairman was elected. North Dakota potato grower Carl Hoverson shares what the industry can expect from the USPB in the marketing year to come.
Hoverson: “Basically for the United States Potato Board the big thing is just to increase the usage of U.S. potatoes and to do that we have to education the consumer about the potato’s nutritional background. I think that will be one of the points we push. I think that one of the things that we need to get across to the consumer is the potato’s nutrition. There is a lot of misconception there. Then also expand the market. To do that we’ve been on some overseas trade missions. There is a program called, ‘Why Buy U.S.?’ These other countries respect the U.S. because we have government standards that make our potato products safe and good. That is all positive things for us. Really the exports are the key to the growth of our industry. The U.S. population as I recall is about 4 percent of the world’s population — there is 96 percent outside of our doors. Especially in Asia, there is such a big demand in the future for U.S. products like french fries, and dehydration. So that is pretty exciting times.”
