Winter Wheat Planting Progress

Winter wheat planting is right on schedule across the nation as USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey shares

Rippey: "Leading the way at this early state is Nebraska. They've already made it to 45 percent planted, 37 percent is the five-year average. Washington is right behind with 44 percent planted and five-year average is 52 percent. It has been little cool and wet in the Northwest for the last several weeks."

In addition to the winter wheat crop numbers, in Washington 50 percent of the potato crop has been harvested and about 31 percent of the alfalfa 5th cutting crop has been completed.

In Idaho, 22 percent of the winter wheat has been planted compared to the five-year average of 20 percent. So far 33 percent of the state's potatoes have been harvested compared to 17 percent as the five year average. Sugar beet harvest is at 15 percent, which is ahead of the five year average of 7 percent.

In Oregon, 9 percent of the winter wheat crop has been planted compared to the 11 percent for the five-year average. The potato harvest is at 74 percent compete and 26 percent of the alfalfa 4th cutting crop is at complete.

In Colorado 36 percent of the winter wheat crop has been planted compared to the five-year average of 30 percent. Spring wheat harvested is at 71 percent, a little behind compared to the five-year average of 83 percent. Outside of the San Luis Valley 73 percent of the potatoes have been harvested and inside the San Luis Valley 20 percent of the potato crop have been harvested.
