Former USDA Secretary Vilsack Named New Strategic Advisor

Colorado's National Western Center has gained a new strategic adviser of food and water initiatives as the former USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack has joined Denver Water and Colorado State University. In addition to supporting the growing educational partnership at the new National Western Center in Denver, Vilsack will participate in lectures, policy discussions, and faculty and student collaborations. He says

Vilsack: "Well, part of the vision of this National Western Center is is to really focus on issues that impact and affect Colorado Agriculture and expanding urban centers. And the balances and the challenges that presents in terms of water resources and energy use. I'm really excited about the prospects of working with folks to continue to figure out best ways to balance the need of production agriculture, new opportunities in urban agriculture and expanding cities and populations in the state Colorado to make sure that we continue to have vibrancy in the state because I think it has an impact not just on the needs of Colorado but I think it also speaks to the needs of the Western U.S. and agriculture and forestry."

Vilsack says he is looking forward to this new opportunity.

Vilsack: "So it is a chance to continue doing work for the producers of this country — which I have a tremendous amount of respect and gratitude — and at the same time be part of hoping to figure out new creative ways to use scarce resources to balance the need of urban communities as well as the rural communities."
