I listened to a video of comments made by the former US Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, via social media over the weekend, and he made the following statement:

"Every one of us that's not a farmer, is not a farmer because we have farmers. We delegate the responsibility of feeding our families to a relatively small percentage of this country..."

In this instance farmer and rancher can be used interchangeably, although we all realize there are differences. It reminds me that as we continue the fight to preserve our way of life and our industry, we need individuals in the eye of our consumers to help them remember that WE, in food and fiber production, make their lifestyles available.  This is a luxury not available to everyone in the world and people often take it for granted.  I am proud to be part of the delegation to provide beef to the population and to represent those that do so on a much larger scale than I.  Let us all work together to keep reminding the consumers, leaders, media, that we (farmers and ranchers) are the backbone of their lifestyle.
