With Absentee Landowner and Leasing Farmer Communication is Critical

Having a positive relationship between landowners and leasing farmers is critical. Communication plays a big role in providing understanding and shared goals. Bird Dog Co-Founder and CEO Dave Myers says that meetings can help facilitate that.

Myers: "One of the things that every farmer and landowner can do to improve communications is to schedule routine meetings. Anytime you can do that, have a set agenda and topics that are important to you — topics that really help to look at how we can improve the long-term value of this land, how can we improve the long-term productivity of this land. Really putting together a plan that does that."

Myers says at least once or twice a year to have more formal meetings with a planned agenda. However informal meetings can also be helpful. He continues by suggesting to use technology to keep information flowing between the farmer and landowner

Myers: "One thing that the farmer can do is really make the landowner feel like part of the operation — just some easy things like photos or videos are good really ways to get the landowner involved."
