According to NASS’ most recent Tenure, Ownership, and Transition of Agricultural Land survey of the 353.8 million acres of rented farmland —- 80 percent are owned by non-farming landlords and nearly 45 percent of those principal landlords have never farmed. Many second or even third generation farmland owners reside in urban areas and not near their farm land.

That makes it rather challenging if you are an ag producer looking to expand their farming operation or landlords looking for a possible change in renters.

That’s where Bird Dog comes in as CEO Dave Myers explains that he created his business Bird Dog as a way to bridge the needs and opportunities for both landlords and prospective renters.

Myers: “One of the biggest issues I’ve seen is that the land owner is changing. As the land owner gets further removed from the farm, they get further removed in that they don’t even live in the area that their land is in anymore. One of the biggest issues is how a grower that wants to grow connect with somebody that they are not ever going to build a relationship with their community. As a farmer and landowner, there has got to be way of bringing them together. That is really what Bird Dog does — is help bring those farmers who want to grow together with land lords that are looking to make changes.”
