11/30/05 Last winter wheat ratings of season

Farm and Ranch November 30, 2005 USDA has issued its last weekly crop ratings of winter wheat for the fall. And USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says this week's report shows another decline in winter wheat ratings from the previous week and a crop that's rated much lower than the one a year ago at this time. Rippey: "Nationally the percentage of the crop rated very poor to poor went up last week from 12 to 15% and the percentage of the crop rated good to excellent down to 52%, down three points from a week ago and way down from last year when the crop was rated 76% good to excellent on November 27th." The problem area being focused on nationally is the southern Plains, Texas and Oklahoma. Rippey: "And a lot of the wheat grown there in the north Texas panhandle and that area has been hit by extremely dry and windy and temperature extreme type condition." 10 The percentage of the Texas crop rated very poor to poor jumped from 37 percent last week to 49 percent this week. In the Northwest, Oregon is the state with the largest portion of its winter wheat rated very poor to poor. That being 16 percent. Thirty percent of Oregon's crop is good to excellent. Idaho's winter wheat is 92 percent good to excellent with Washington's at 57 percent good to excellent, a point drop from last week. . Winter wheat emergence was still lagging the five year average in Washington and Oregon but ahead nationally at 94 percent emerged.
