There is $700,000 in grant funds available for Colorado organizations and associations that need it to control noxious weeds.

The State Department of Agriculture tells Colorado Ag Today that of that amount, $50,000 will be used to control noxious weeds in areas of the state that experienced wildfire or flooding this year.

Steve Ryder, the State Weed Coordinator at the CDA says this money was appropriated by the legislature back in 2012.

"It's a significant amount of funds that we are to pass through to local entities which are primarily counties, municipalities conservation districts we've also worked with ditch companies, larger homeowners associations and property associations."

He says that's important because the list of noxious weeds is pretty long.

"Up in the northern central part of the state and then south of Denver and Douglas County that's a real high incidence areas for leafy spurge. More common around the state would be the thistle's and nap weeds."

Ryder says because of the significant wildfire activity in the state last year, noxious weeds may be a bigger problem on those newly disturbed lands. They hope to get out in front of those disturbance-based flushes of noxious weeds so they don't become established and become a long-term and very expensive problem for counties and cities.
