Tick Season will be here before you know it, be prepared and protected

For today’s Farm and Ranch Report, I’m Susan Allen, in for Rick Worthington. Given the frigid weather in many parts of the northwest and West, it’s hard to believe that tick season is around the corner. My conversation with Rangeland consultant Andie Rieber of Adell Oregon who has suffered the deliberating effects of the lime disease for years reminds us that it’s coming

REIBER: The first thing to understand is unless there is a very prolonged freeze ticks can survive throughout the winter but ticks really start emerging when the snow melts and the weather warms up, so there’s no special day when they emerge but when people start going out in the range turning out their cattle, riding around in the brush and the weather warms particularly in April, May and June that is high tick season.

Consider Lyme Disease a legitimate threat if you spend a lot of time outdoors.

RIEBER: you need to take serious precautions to ensure one, that you don’t get ticks on you and if you do, that you find them and if you have embedded ticks you have them probably removed and keep an eye out for any ensuing symptoms that might suggest they have transmitted a disease.

Ticks are increasingly prevalent, they are now found in all the lower 48 states and the diseases that they carry are spreading.
