06/02/06 Koreans tour PNW spud industry

Farm and Ranch June 2, 2006 As part of its international market development program the US Potato Board recently led a group of South Korean nutrition and food service professionals on a tour of the northwest potato industry. Matt Harris Director of International Trade for the Washington State Potato Commission describes some of what the Koreans saw in Washington. Harris: "They stopped in Moses Lake and in Pasco and were able to tour the area and look at processing potatoes for dehydrated and also for French fries and frozen." Susan Weller, International Marketing Manager for the Potato Board, says it was sort of a potatoes 101 course and what the visitors learned will get wide dissemination back in Korea. Weller: "They have blogs and that sort of thing in Korea that they will be using to distribute this information to the general public and their students. In fact we have some different educational videos that were shown. Actually all of them wanted copies of those so they could take them back and show students in their classes how the technology is there and the nutrition information." Weller says at the end of the tour the Korean professional most knowledgeable about potatoes said she was very impressed with the care and pride the U.S. producers take in their potato production. That's the Northwest Farm and Ranch Report. Brought to you in part by the Washington State Potato Commission. Nutrition today! Good health tomorrow!
