09/04/06 CCA credit for on-line NAWG weed course

Farm and Ranch September 4, 2006 The National Association of Wheat Growers says its on-line weed resistance management course launched earlier this year has been approved for one unit of pest management Certified Crop Advisor Credit. The course is available through the NAWG web site at www.wheatworld.org Daren Coppock, NAWG CEO, says the web-based tool serves several audiences. Coppock: "It is designed to appeal to a couple of different audiences. One is for producers themselves who need a refresher or some specific information on weed resistance management. The other is for those just curious about what the industry is doing to make sure we steward these tools appropriately. And so that audience would include policymakers, reporters and the general public." Coppock says while other groups have had on-line herbicide resistance courses, NAWG's is different. Coppock: "In that we have very different practices from region to region and class to class. This one is broken out to tailor directly to the needs of those who want to look up, if I an in the PNW what do I do? Or if I am in the northern Plains how do those practices differ for me? Hopefully it will be a real useful hands on kind of tool for growers to use." The region-specific lessons have been reviewed by weed science experts in the six regions, including Carol Mallory-Smith of Oregon State University. Those interested in taking the course for CCA credit should contact the NAWG office at www.wheatworld.org I'm Bob Hoff and that's the Northwest Farm and Ranch Report on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
