Checking On Fruit

Checking On Fruit. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

It appeasers that the 2014 cherry crop is beginning to wind down and for the most part has been a good season with a few exceptions according to NW Cherries BJ Thurlby.

THURLBY: Obviously this heat that we had for 10 days that were close to 100 has had a little negative effect on the crop most growers will tell you but a lot of that fruit is in higher elevation areas and so by that simple fact this fruit has held up really well and we've been luck in the fact that the cherries this year have been so excellent and high in quality.

Even with the hot days in most areas the nights got a cool down which helped the fruit recover.

THURLBY: I was on a tour at the end of last week and looking at fruit running all over the place and you know the fruit looks really good still. We're talking about a lot of fruit, 300-400 pressure which is where we want it. So far so good. We've shipped about 18 1/2 million boxes and if you look at the crop curve it's kind of scary because this is all in 50 days that we've had that much fruit.

And the fruit this year has been really good. I should know, I've eaten a lot of it!

THURLBY: Consumers have responded really well to the cherries and as of today just spending some time talking with different sales folks around out industry - we're still pushing hard and keeping fruit moving and that's the key to the cherry deal.

Thurlby does think the industry estimate may wind up being a little low as some varieties have been packing out a little heavier than expected.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
