Making Choices

Making Choices. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

Eating healthy things is a choice but if you need some facts to back up your choice, here you go. Alan Taylor with Pink Lady® America says people who choose snacks like candy bars or apples can add up the stats themselves.

TAYLOR: We're hoping to get as much attention as possible and already we're seeing that happen to a certain extent that we're asking consumer through our apple industry to just take a quick and simple look at nutritional values and compare apples such as Pink Lady®, all apples in general and the junk food out there in terms of such things as calories that they're consuming and also in this case with apples, the amount of fiber that they get by eating apples compared to let's say a candy bar or something like that.

Simply eating one medium apple a day such as Pink Lady®, amounts to 47,550 calories over the period of a year, while a candy bar totals a whopping 108, 090 calories. As for the fiber, the apple yields 1,825 grams over a year of consuming one each day, while the candy bar provides just 475 grams. Taylor says there are some tough challenges when it comes to getting the message out.

TAYLOR: Since it's a universally known healthy product and I have a modest budget to tell the whole country about it while the folks that are peddling what's well known as junk food have literally billions of dollars to spend on not so healthy products.
