Following the Fruit. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.
I recently did a story on the Fruit Loop in Hood River, Oregon. Jean Godfrey, spokesperson for the Fruit Loop recently gave me a call and we chatted about what it is and how it came about.
GODFREY: Our Fruit Loop is 30 farm stands here in Hood River Valley. They got together about 20 years ago. In the beginning of course there weren't 30, there was just a handful and decided that it would be more effective to do their marketing together and create kind of an agrotourism destination and it's just grown
Godfrey says it really is made up of small mom and pop farm stands.
GODFREY: If you start down the Columbia River and you do the whole Fruit Loop, it's a 35-mile loop that just goes up to Mount Hood almost and then back down to town another route. Sometimes tour busses will come in so most people come in and do in their cars or their bicycles.
She talks about some of the things you will find on the loop.
GODFREY: We have our nine wineries so you know tasting rooms and they have vineyards on site. Then we have an alpaca place. She also has a yarn shop and then we have two lavender places right now. We have one organic vegetable farm and then the balance of them are fruit stands that carry all of our local fruit. You can easily turn it into a weekend.
