Pesticide Collection Plans

Pesticide Collection Plans

Pesticide Collection Plans. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

Free pesticide disposal courtesy of the Washington State Department of Agriculture is a way to get rid of undated agricultural and commercial-grade pesticides. Joe Hoffman is the WSDA's program coordinator and they've been looking for sites to hold their disposal events.

HOFFMAN: What we're doing is right now finding out where people are interested in having - that need disposal through Eastern Washington and then based upon the response we get then we will schedule events around into those areas.

WSDA works with a contracted hazardous waste company to package the pesticides for safe, legal transportation and disposal..

HOFFMAN: There's still no charge. We take possession of the pesticides and any future liability that may happen stops with us. Customers names do not go on any manifest and we destroy their records after we've disposed of the materials so if anything were to happen, 20-30 years down the road some superfund site or whatever, there is no record other than Department of Agriculture of being involved in those shipments which is an important thing.

If you have an interest in having a event near your location you need to contact the department by the end of the day today by either calling or emailing them.

HOFFMAN: The way our program works now is rather than us announcing an event is a person can go to our website at anytime, it's set up so they can download an inventory sheet and then send that back into us at anytime they want. That's really the key is don't wait to hear from us. if you have a need, contact us.
