Kick-Off to Harvest Party

Kick-Off to Harvest Party

Kick-Off to Harvest Party. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

A lot of places celebrate the annual wine grape crush but Ethen Warren, Assistant Wine Maker/Tasting Room Manager for Tucannon Cellars in Benton City says they wanted to do something a bit different.

WARREN: We didn't think the harvest party that they have, the Catch The Crush, we thought that was going to miss all the excitement so by people being able to come out knowing kind of getting to see the process as it's actually going on - we thought that would be a much better opportunity for people to actually get to see some of the grapes as they're sitting in the fermentation bin and they get to actually see them fermenting

Warren says the juice is quite active and most people don't get to see that. Tucannon Cellars is relatively new boutique winery and Warren says they have started picking their syrah grapes.

WARREN: This is the earliest one we've ever had by about 3 weeks. That's pretty significant in terms of your typical harvest for around this area. I remember our first harvest in 2010, it started about in mid-October. This year we will be getting Merlot, a Cab Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Malbec

White grapes may be hard for them to come by this year due to the wildfires. Warren says the Kick-Off to Harvest Party gets underway Sept. 5th & 6th from 11am to 7 pm. In addition to a great class of wine they will also be serving up their delicious cherry wood-fired pizza.
