With The Fruit Grower Report, I'm Susan Allen. I realized I didn't know much about apricots, so I asked Cole Jessup Cole the apricot specialist at CMI a Wenatchee-based company that packs and ships some of the country's best quality apricots, if there is much of an export market for this soft fruit

Jessup : We typically don't' export that many of them, Canada being the one country that probably gets most of our exports. Most of it is domestic, Mexico get a little bit but not that much we like to stay fairly local with most of them.

Their company doesn't focus on at all on the dried fruit market either

Jessup : Most NW apricots are sold whole and fresh, no typically if someone picks it up at the store and takes it home and dries it himself. WE just deal with the fresh product either fresh or in the bag.

Brings me to packaging, Cole said they introduced a new grab and go style here is their VP of Marketing Steve Lutz

Lutz: One of the things we've found with our apricots is that consumer are really responding to packaging so what we've come out with this year with a special pouch bag that typically holds 7 apricots that highly graphic pouch bag, really nice clear film on the bag, the product just pops on the shelf and we think that's really a superior way to sell this product because it just merchandizes so well.

Remember there's a short window of time to enjoy these unique boutique apricots that only our NW growers can grow ......and it's now! you'll know them by that CMI label.
