With today's Fruit Grower's Report, I'm Bob Larson ... Wenatchee-based Stemilt Growers announced a brand new apple hybrid that they are very excited about ... so much so, you might say they're giving it RAVE reviews ... Brianna Shales-"Together with the University of Minnesota, we just announced our newest apple variety at Stemilt will be called Rave and that is its Trademark name so it's basically what the apple after it gets harvested will go to market as." Stemilt's Brianna Shales says the Rave is just the latest apple success story to come from researchers at the University of Minnesota's apple breeding program ... Brianna Shales – "They've had a lot of success stories in their past, particularly with the apple breeder David Bedford. He was the one that found the prodigy Honeycrisp and also its offspring Sweet Tango ... and now Rave!" So how'd they come up with the Rave? Brianna Shales - "It's a Honeycrisp-cross, so that is a variety that a lot of people are crossing these days. But the unique thing about Rave is that it's Honeycrisp and MonArk, which is an unreleased variety that was grown in Arkansas of all places." Shales says besides the incredible crunch and juicy flavor, the Rave will hold the unique position of number one on the harvest schedule... Brianna Shales - "We're expecting to harvest next year's crop in late July and then start taking it to market in early August, next summer." Stemilt is in the process of developing a logo and packaging for the Rave's release next Spring.
