With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Washington State University’s viticulture and enology research program has received a huge gift of over a quarter million dollars from the Auction of Washington Wines.

For those who don’t know, Executive Director Sherri Swingle says they are a non-profit representing the State’s Wine Industry …

SHERRI SWINGLE-2 = 26 … “Every year we do a series of events that promote what’s happening here in Washington with our wine industry bringing a lot of our industry members together, collectors and buyers from all over the state as well as around the country, and celebrate Washington wine. Amongst all of that, we’re able to, in the end, pull aside our proceeds and contribute those back into the communities with the V & E program being one of our primary focuses.”

Swingle says as the industry grows, research becomes more crucial…

SHERRI SWINGLE-1 = 26 … “And this is, hmmm, maybe the second year that the organization has made a gift specifically to the research fund. Prior to that, we had funded the endowed chair of Viticulture and Enology, Dr. Thomas Henick-Kling, at WSU and have been a huge supporter of the education and research in Viticulture and Enology in Washington State for well over 15 years now.”

Swingle says they hope to top the $278,000 gift next year as planning for the fundraising for 2017 is well underway.

Listen tomorrow for more on the upcoming Auction of Washington Wines events.
