With today's Fruit Grower Report, I'm Bob Larson. For the first time, the U.S., and the Pacific Northwest, will play host to the Interpera Congress, a world-wide gathering of pear industry insiders.

Pear Bureau Northwest president Kevin Moffitt says the conference in Wenatchee two weeks from now will be forward-looking ...

KEVIN MOFFITT ... "We'll be talking about things like new pear variety development, root stocks, integrated pest management, but also things like harvest and packing house mechanization, as well as consumption and how to increase consumption."

Moffitt says there are some very exciting things happening in the pear world ...

KEVIN MOFFITT ... "There are a lot of great developments going on in new pear varieties, for example. It's just that we haven't moved as quickly, we haven't been able to move as quickly, as they have on the apple side. So, bringing these people together, we're going to have speakers from all over the world, the U.S., along with California, Oregon and Washington, as well as the international speakers really drilling in to what's the latest on these issues."

I asked Kevin what kind of attendance he's expecting ...

KEVIN MOFFITT ... "Well, we're certainly expecting ... we're hoping for a good attendance from the Northwest, perhaps California as well. In the past, there've been a lot of Europeans that have attended this event and we're hoping for a good turnout from Europe. It's not a huge conference overall. It'll probably be 100, close to 100, 110 people. I think the majority will come from the Pacific Northwest."

The Interpera Congress will be held at the Wenatchee Confluence Center June 15th and 16th.
