Washington State Wine Research Review Pt 1
With today's Fruit Grower Report, I'm Bob Larson. The annual Washington State Wine Research Review will be held next Thursday and Friday at the Walter Clore Wine & Culinary Center in Prosser.
Those attending will be asked to provide feedback on the research proposals presented at the review where Research Program Manager Melissa Hansen says projects will be specific to our region ...
MELISSA HANSEN ... "Obviously, Washington state has some unique characteristics in our growing conditions. You know, we've got these great soils, these Missoula Floods Glacial soils. We've got climate. We typically have higher pH, higher acidity because we have those cool nights that keep the flavors and keep the acidity than some of the warmer climates. You know, it's using the best tools, the best management strategies not just to grow the grapes, but when you're making the wine."
Hansen says last year, about a million dollars was used to fund 18 research projects...
MELISSA HANSEN ... "The money for the funding comes from the Wine Commission, so that's the industry itself through their assessments, and the Auction of Washington Wines. Every bottle of wine that's sold in the state, part of the tax that the state collects goes to fund V&E research, viticulture and enology research at WSU. And, then WSU kicks in some research money as well."
