With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Washington State wine grape growers and wineries are invited to participate once again in the Washington State Wine Commission’s annual Research Review in Prosser.

The Commission’s Research Program Manager, Melissa Hansen says it’s a key part of the statewide grape and wine research program …

HANSEN … “It’s kind of like Shark Tank. When researchers present their proposals, some are new, some are continuing, but even research projects that are maybe midway into their length they still have to justify funding for the next year. It’s not an automatic, give them the money.”

And those pitches are made to the powers-that-be …

HANSEN … “So, the Wine Research Advisory Committee, which is the committee that makes the funding recommendations to the Wine Commission Board for research projects, they listen to the proposals and then they meet later and decided how to divvy up limited funds. So, they divvy up the money.”

Hansen says when you get down to it, it’s a pretty cool event …

HANSEN ... “They get pretty, pretty geeky, but as some of the Wine Commission Board members have said in the past, when you really get into this research can be pretty sexy. There’s a lot of new, innovative, great concepts, great ideas. If we had unlimited funds, everything would be funded, but there’s some really cool things that are happening on the research world, a lot of emphasis on precision viticulture.”

The Research Review will be held at the Walter Clore Center in Prosser January 16th & 17th. Join us tomorrow for more on the annual Wine Research Review.
