With today's Fruit Grower Report, I'm Bob Larson. Last week, India announced they'll boost the tariff on several crops, including U.S. apples, from 50 to 70%. On the plus side, Mexico overwhelmingly ratified the USMCA.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says if Mexico's move pushes the U.S. closer to ratification, our trade picture with other countries should benefit ...

NEWHOUSE ... "Certainly we want all those markets available to us, but the progress that we're making with USMCA, I think, with bode well for making progress on some of the other countries with whom we are negotiating."

As I spoke with Newhouse on Thursday, he said there are other positive signs ...

NEWHOUSE ... "The other exciting about the USMCA is that not only is Mexico ratified, but the Canadian Prime Minister is in Washington D.C. today, meeting with the President, meeting with some Congressional leaders. I'm hoping to meet with him this evening."

Speaking of Congress, Newhouse says there's positive news there as well ...

NEWHOUSE ... "I think that we're making some good progress. Speaker Pelosi has named a committee of Democratic members to look into different areas and concerns that they might have, so at least they're talking about some of the things that concern them, and that's a good thing. They're at the table negotiating. So, I think, to keep pushing is critical for us. We've got to get this done, but there's a lot of good things happening in this area and I'm optimistic at this point."

The President has expressed confidence the USMCA will be approved very soon.
