Northwest Cherries' David Severn is very excited about a new retail technology that is being implemented in the East Coast grocery store chain, Stop and Shop. Part G.P.S., part consumer portable data base, NBC's "Today" consumer expert Phil Lempert recently demonstrated a new shopping cart that works with a built in consumer tablet and a Stop and Shop customer card. LEMPERT: And then basically, you can take this tablet and as you shop around the store, it's going to tell me what I bought last time, it's also going to give me my shopping list, and also what's on sale. And built in global positioning system technology helps consumers find items in the store that is part of the customers' shopping list. But where Severn sees potential to push the demand curve for cherries on the retail level is the back end of Stop and Shop's system. Consumers can go on line to develop an eating profile using their shopping cards. So say a consumer only wants fruits high in Vitamin C and antioxidants. If the computer scans a product, and it doesn't match the consumer's eating profile, it will recommend another product that does, like say Northwest cherries. SEVERN: What it means is that is we need to remind retailers they have an opportunity here to trade consumers up to cherries. Cherries have a lot of health benefits going for them. And they have a lot of great information about them. There is no word yet when such technology will be applied to West coast based grocery stores and retailers.
