06/17/05 Many benefit from Idaho dairies

There are new, modern dairies being built in many parts of southern Idaho and if it continues at this pace we'll soon be the fourth largest milk producing state in the nation. Oren Derives has built a million dollar a year business by building dairies. DEVRIES "I started my construction business basically just because we needed good contractors in the area, we needed to know how to put dairies together, how to deal with the elements that we have to deal with every day." Jacob Phillips of Burley and his All-Pro Dairy Supply Company to do rag laundry for dairies. PHILLIPS "We pick up their dirties and leave new clean ones just about every other day, make sure they have enough rags to keep their cows wiped down." Meet Dustin Vincent who is always busy with his heifer replacement business. VINCENT "We pick up the heifers from the dairies about three times a day. Twice in the day and once at night we bring them in. We like to do it that way so we can vaccinate prior to colostrum. Just three of the thousands who depend on the Idaho dairy industry for their livelihood. And that only touches the surface. In our next Dairy Month report, DAIRYMAN "They say cheese is the future, so here I am. " Voice of Idaho Agriculture Bill Scott
